homeade unsweetened apple butter

It’s very difficult to find apple butter at the store, let alone finding homemade unsweetened apple butter without added sugars or sweeteners. So the best solution is to quite simply make your own. Thanks to crock-pots, this recipe is an absolute breeze. Apple butter gets its name not because it actually has butter in it, but because the apples reduce down to a buttery-like texture. Though the recipe takes a very long time to make, it is completely worth the time you put into making it. Next to the taste of apple butter, the aroma that fills your house will make it smell like Thanksgiving. Also, most apple butter recipes tell you to peel the apples, but the skin is where you’ll find a lot of fiber and vitamins. The skin also adds significant flavor to the apple butter and wouldn’t taste nearly as good without it.

1. Core the apples, and cut them into small chunks.

2. Put the apple chunks in a blender or food processor and blend until there is an apple sauce-like consistency.

3. Combine all the ingredients in a crock pot.

4. Cook on high heat for one (1) hour.

5. After the first hour, turn the crock pot to low heat and cook for 12 to 18 hours.

6. If the mixture is still a little watery after that, put it into a pot uncovered on medium heat until most of the standing liquid has evaporated.

7. After the recipe is complete, you can either refrigerate it or you can freeze it. If you refrigerate it, it will last for around three weeks. If you want to freeze it, put it in jars, and it will last for six to eight months.

You can put this homemade unsweetened apple butter on top of some healthy pancakes, on a sandwich with almond butter, or deliciously snacked on by itself.

This looks terrific – and easy. All the recipes I have seen are way too complicated and make too much for our family.

I didn’t realize it was so easy!

I love the idea of naturally sweet fruit “butters.”

What a unique use for the crock-pot! I usually only think of it for making soups and casseroles, I’ll have to give this apple butter a try!

Have a lot of apples from apple picking last weekend. May try this. Seems simple & love that it has no sugar.

Thank you for sharing this with Foodie Friends Friday. I’ve never thought to make apple butter but your recipe is definitely worth making.
